When I was young in the Lord I always thought “Prayer Time” was a 30-minute time block that I set aside each day to meet with the Lord. Now don’t get me wrong, a block of time set aside to pray is absolutely a necessary discipline and absolutely a part of having a prayer life. HOWEVER, if you think a prayer life is confined to this block of time I would absolutely beg you to challenge this thinking.
I have always been a prayer girl. I can remember at a young age always having a desire to talk to God and having a deep belief that He was truly listening to me. When I was younger, I would get so discouraged that if I didn’t pray for 30 minutes, then I was such a lousy Christian and really didn’t love God. It was that kind of belief system that led me to constantly quit this spiritual practice before I even got started because I knew I would flake out. I can remember when I was a Sophomore in High School, the Holy Spirit coached me with the idea to write with pen “TTG” (Talk to God) on my hand. Yes, say what you want, but the Lord told me to write on myself with PEN HA! Oh no, He must know He is bigger than ink poisoning Ha! Anyways, He said to my heart, “Every time you see that on your hand, take a minute and talk to me, cast your cares, ask me my thoughts, tell me what makes you happy, or ask me what I need from you this day.” This practice SET ME FREE! I became so aware of His presence and His voice leading my life. I started to have a REAL relationship with Him because our interactions were constant. This practice disciplined me to include Him in ALL things! I remember starting to believe at that age that He was my “Secret Weapon.” That if I were taking a test, He would remind me what I had studied, or if I was working, He would help me with a customer. He was with me, and we were partnering together to do life!
Paul instructs us in 1 Thessalonians 5: 17-18 AMP saying “Be unceasing and persistent in prayer, in every situation (no matter what the circumstances) be thankful and continually give thanks to God; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.
Unceasing defined- Not coming to an end; continuous.
Persistent defined- Continuing firmly or obstinately in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition.
Paul tells us our prayer life should never come to an end, and that no matter what opposition comes our way we should continue firmly in our prayers. Prayer is talking to God. So this means our conversations with God should be continual and without ending. I have found that the Lord loves this continuous dialogue. I have experienced His JOY in having an unending conversation with me all day.
Now I am not telling you to write with pen “TTG” on your hand but if it works do it! Or maybe it’s your phone screensaver, or alarms set on your phone or watch to remind you to stop and talk to the Lord. I challenge you in this New Year to conversate all through your days with God more. I promise you will see the fruit of it and experience God’s presence, wisdom, understanding, grace, peace, joy, and soooo much more! It will become for you like it is for me a secret weapon for life!!
Praying and believing your week is filled with so much goodness from the Lord!!
