I just started into the book of Daniel in my daily bible reading…Honestly, I can’t express enough how important it is to be in your Bible, sometimes we are mad at God because we feel like He hasn’t spoken to us in a while but I’m telling you more times than not the way I hear God speak to me regularly is through my daily Bible reading.
One of the things I love most in the Bible is how often I see God’s eye for detail…When He made creation, when He constructed the temple, when He wanted the wall rebuilt, when He wanted the temple rebuilt, how He wanted land divided up between the tribes, and the list goes on and on. HE HAS A PLAN for it all. It’s made me so many times stop and stare at what that says about God's nature. He is not a God that is winging it or a God that is good at being creative but not at organization or execution. He is ALL in ALL, He knows exactly what He is doing on all fronts BIG and SMALL, He has a plan and He knows how it should be executed from beginning to end. When I look at how He led Abraham, Moses, Noah, David, and Nehemiah, It causes me to think and say to Him, “Well if you led them that way you will lead me the same way!” This thought now has become a default in my everyday life. I have become fixated on wanting His way and plan over mine. I am just cocky enough in our relationship to keep Him accountable to that kind of partnership in life.
I don’t know if I ever told you about how I started in Interior Design, but it is nothing short of miraculous. During Covid, my responsibilities at the church became pretty nonexistent due to all the restrictions. I was really sad about this and can remember going on multiple prayer walks lamenting to the Lord about what I could put my hand to in such an intense moment in humanity. I went to my husband's office one day; he was dealing with major “Big Picture” issues trying to keep the church healthy and whole during the pandemic. I looked around and saw he had samples of materials layered all throughout his office. A generous church member who owned a reconstruction business had offered to help us renovate during lockdowns, so Michael was also overseeing this. When I saw some of his material picks, I told him, “Babe, you cannot be choosing this stuff, this is totally not your gifting ha! Let me help you with this!” I saw deep relief come over his face, but also I was like, “Wait, Gabby…what makes you think you know how to do this?” Instantly, I felt the Lord whisper to my heart, “It’s ok, I do, I’ll show you how.” QUE THE TEARS! He really did, you guys. He showed me how. He gave me plans and a strategy and put words and understanding in my mouth that there was no way I could have known. He gave me the confidence to work with contractors and architects and ask questions that were smart and inspiring. HE MADE ME LOOK SO GOOD! It was such a partnership, and I could sense that just as excited as I was to learn this new art, He was just as excited to show me and do it with me. There was such synergy. I depended on Him and asked Him every time I didn’t know what to do. “God, what should I do?” and when I did know, “God, what do you think?” I am telling you He taught me how and continues to teach how.
Every project I take on before I ever start designing, I say, “Lord, you know exactly what needs to happen here, you know what color, what layout, what furnishings, and details will best fit and bless this client. Help me do that, Lord.” He coaches me the whole time, every time. He is my secret weapon for sure, and I wouldn’t want to do it any other way!
I don’t know what’s in your hands right now, or what details you’re working through in work or family but here is what I know...God wants to be involved deeply and if you let Him tell you His thoughts on whatever problem you are trying to solve, He will totally download a plan and strategy that you couldn’t have thought up on your own, and it will blow your mind.
Engage him, stop and ask him what He thinks, wait, and give space for Him to respond. I pray this week that we would lean not to our own understanding but in all our ways acknowledge Him knowing that HE will make our paths straight (Prov 3: 5-6).
